Meet the Team

Our Founder's Story

Founded by Robert Little, Ph.D., SMARTForward Initiative was born from personal experience and professional expertise. A product of an under-resourced community who grew up on a small farm in Mississippi and attended Title 1 schools, Dr. Little overcame academic challenges to earn his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology. His transformation exemplifies the resilience and potential he sees in every Black boy. Today, Dr. Little serves as the Executive Director of SMARTForward Initiative, leading the organization's mission to transform educational outcomes.

Dr. Little brings authentic experience as a 5th-grade teacher in a Title 1 elementary school where 100% of students received free and reduced lunch. He has provided student motivational assembly programs, professional development, and parent involvement workshops at hundreds of Title 1 schools nationwide.

His commitment to educational equity is reflected in his extensive body of work: four children's books in the Accelerated Reader Program specifically for this population, co-authorship of DreamPower: Using Life Lessons, Research-based Practices and the Psychology of Motivation to Win in Education for parents and educators, and most recently, Schooling Jamaal: Using the SMART Framework to Raise and Educate Black Boys in Title 1 Elementary Schools (2025). This groundbreaking 295-page book transforms his doctoral research into practical strategies, offering parents and educators evidence-based approaches to nurture Self-assured, Motivated, Academically successful, Resilient, Thinkers. The SMART Framework represents the culmination of Dr. Little's research, teaching experience, and unwavering belief that every Black boy can excel when surrounded by high expectations and support.

SMARTForward's Board of Directors provides guidance, oversight, and support to the organization, ensuring our actions stay aligned with our Mission and Vision.
